How to conduct and present an artistic research project within the confines of an academic institution and as part of an artistic field?
Reflecting on the relationship between theory and artistic practice, curator Suzanne Sanders relates the students’ different individual practices to the Deleuzian concept of the fold, both on a conceptual level and on material level that puts the idea of ‘two sides to the same coin’ into substance.
The UvA RMA Artistic Research occupies a unique position in the Netherlands, providing an alternative to the at times artificial opposition between professional arts training and academic programmes.
It seeks to form a bridge between the arts and scholarly research by offering insight into, and training in new forms of research. These new forms provide an alternative to existing approaches, stressing applied, practical research as opposed to fundamental, theoretical research. The programme’s coordinators are Jeroen Boomgaard and Paula Albuquerque.
The exhibition and public programme provide an important opportunity for the students to share and discuss their work and different ways of knowledge production with artists, academics, friends and visitors alike, based on the combination of transdisciplinary scholarly thinking and material practices.
