Museum Boijmans van Beuningen seeks to make new connections within the city of Rotterdam - their immediate surroundings - by engaging with it in new ways.
Based in a community space (huis van de wijk) at Hillevliet since 2020, Boijmans initiated an open dialogue with local artists, (social) organisations and inhabitants, many of whom have never considered visiting the museum before.
I was invited into the organisaton as an ‘outside eye’ to reflect upon Boijmans’ current practice and experiences at Hillevliet and to advise on the development of practical tools, to seize the opportunities the museum has opened up for itself at Hillevliet.
Through fieldwork and by situating Boijmans’ current organisation within an international discourse of rethinking the definitions, roles and functions of museums for cities in the 21st century, I developed a research piece (available upon request) that explores the development of adequate infrastructural and programming strategies for the (near) future of the museum as a whole.
